김치경 박사님께,
저는 미국에 살고 있는 재미교포입니다. 궁금한 점이 있어서 이렇게 인터넷을 통해 박사님께 글을 올리게 되었습니다. 옛날 동양에선 경락을 통해 기가 흐른다고 하였지요. 혹시 경락이란 우리 몸속에 있는 신경이 아닌지요. 그리고 기란 우리 몸속의 신경을 통해 흐르고 있는 전력이 아닌가 하는 생각이 듭니다. "교육"이란 책자에 보면 다음과 같은 글이 있습니다.
두뇌의 전력은 신체의 모든 조직에 활기를 주고 질병을 저항하는데 평가할 수 없는 큰 도움을 주는 것입니다. The electric power of the brain vitalizes the whole system, and is thus an invaluable aid in resisting disease. (Education 197)
온몸을 모두 연결하고 있는 두뇌 신경은 사람이 하늘로 더불어 교제하고 또한 속사람에게 영향을 주는 것입니다. 무엇이든지 신경 조직을 흐르는 전류의 순환을 방해하고 따라서 활력을 약하게 하고 지적 감수성을 둔하게 하는 것은 모두 도덕성을 일깨우는 것을 더욱 어렵게 만듭니다. The brain nerves that connect with the whole system are the medium through which heaven communicates with man and affects the inmost life. Whatever hinders the circulation of the electric current in the nervous system, thus weakening the vital powers and lessening mental susceptibility, makes it more difficult to arouse the moral nature. (Education 209)
전구를 발명한 에디슨은 어쩌면 기 (전류)가 막혀서 병이 생긴다는 것을 알고 있었는지도 모르겠습니다. 그는 말하길 "미래의 의사들은 환자에게 약을 안주고 대신 ... 병의 원인과 예방에 흥미를 갖게 할것이라"고 하였습니다. The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.
